Research Compliance Services (RCS) supports the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS), which serves as the University of Oregon's Institutional Review Board (IRB). The mission of the CPHS/IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of people participating in University of Oregon research.
For information and instructions on applying for review and approval of research projects involving human subjects, please see the links to the left.
Obtaining and Maintaining IRB Approval
Please note: the person listed as Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for seeking and maintaining all IRB approvals prior to commencing human subject research activities.
Principal Investigators must also provide the IRB with all required materials to request continuing review in a timely manner. Therefore, RCS requires for continuation at least 45 days in advance of the IRB approval expiration date. If the PI does not need to continue human subject research activities beyond the IRB approval date, the PI must properly close the study with RCS.
RCS standardly sends all correspondence to the person listed as PI and the Faculty Advisor, if applicable. As a courtesy, we can include a limited number of personnel on correspondence; however, we cannot guarantee that the additional personnel for such special requests will always be included in correspondence. Ultimately, the PI is responsible for ensuring that the appropriate persons on their research team receive any correspondence the PI deems necessary.
